renaming & boot damage questions

I'm retiring some old drives with a new, bigger drive. So the new guy
is partitioned. One of those old drives is not booted from bios but
contains XP (where I live). I'm tryng to do this without spending any
money. (See previous post).
So now I think I've got good copies on the new drive. But one never
knows. So what is my backup?

1. Xp gives you Computer management/storage/disk management tool that
lets you change drive letters and paths.
If I get in trouble I can only get to W98 and the net. Is there any
way to do the letters/paths thing if you can't get to XP?

2. If not ... then the only way I can think of, if I can't boot to XP
(oh,oh), is that I can dual boot to the original XP disk but it would
be named "X" instead of F. This is really my backup so I want to get
here to do a little renaming then get out quick.
How much damage, if any, is caused by XP seeing "X" instead of F???

Then I'll boot again with this drive, "X", renamed back to F.
and try again......

thanks

One never knows until one tries to recover.

You should always get to XP. Did you ever use WinPE in any form?

That depends on what one expects/does after renaming.

I'm afraid that renaming will be remembered by original disk XP, not this
drive.

Not with the XP boot drive it doesnt.

Yes, boot the XP CD and do an install in place. Basically proceed
as if you are going to do a clean install, specify the partition that
XP is already installed on. The install will ask you if you want to
repair that XP install. Grovel furiously in the general direction of
Mecca when no one is looking and then say yes.

It should still have the letter it had before you did anything.

It would be better to do the copying to the new drive again instead.

That shouldnt happen.

thats why I'm checking my escape route first

agreed & that's what I'm trying to figure out. Never heard of WinPE.
See it's not free! But there is BartPE. Now have to figure if my cd
has sp1 on it. if not then how to slipstream.
That depends on what one expects/does after renaming.

had to go to plan b as you cannot change the boot drive. It's amazing
how much I learn, forget & relearn.

Could not see the partition! Have a complex setup.

true

That shouldnt happen.

Finally got it done & migrated. Now I know I need some extra tools
from a non hard drive boot media. Looking at BartPE..

thanks
