renaming an object

In Access 2007 I cannot rename an object (or I get only a one character
rename).
I select the object, right-click to get the object menu, click Rename. The
program highlights the name briefly and then almost immediately deselects the
name. I have used Access for years and just recently started having this
problem. Maybe I changed some setting somewhere.

Do you maybe have a form open with a Timer event running? Although I
haven't experienced the phenomenon you describe, it sounds similar to what
happens when you type code in the VB Editor while a Timer event is running.
