Renaming a printer

Windows XP pro, 4GB memory, 50GB remaining on hard drive.
I would like to rename printers, both network and direct connected.
I am using an administrator acount. I can not change the name of a printer
connected via USB. I get the error message: Operation could not be completed.
On the network, I tried changing the port to a local, and it will not let me
do that either.

What type of printer is the one on the network?
If the printer is in the network you might need to re-name it on the
server it is plugged into.
Alternatively, some printers have a managing page where you can do
administrative duties, such as change IP addresses and/or rename
printers.
Your printer might have a gui interface. To mine, I have to connect
via telnet. Depends on how old the printer is.

If it's over the network, try running a port scan to its IP address
and see what ports are open and act accordingly (ie, if 8080 try your
web browser, if 23 telnet)..
Not sure why you'd not be able to re-name your USB printer. Perhaps
it's being used?

Thanks for the reply.
My usb printer suddenly allowed me to rename it. No one else was in the
office when I was attempting it.
The network printer I am trying to rename is a color copier. I think I will
go at the install another way.
Thanks
Rick
