Mike

I am having trouble renaming files. When I right click on
a file name and try to rename it I get message saying that
if I rename the file extention, I may become unusable. I
have not had this problem before and do not know how to
correct it. When I go ahead and rename it anyway, then
try to reopen the file, I have to choose to "open with".
It does not open automatically.
I must have reconfigured something, but don't know what.
Can you help.

Hi Mike,
What type of file extension are you changing from and
to what type are you changing to ??
This warning is normal as your machine won't know the
significance of the change till the next time it access it.
Generally you'd only be changing extensions on say,
*.avi files, *.icon files and perhaps to *.Old files ??
Very few other renames will truly work.
Explorer may then ask you to select the correctly associated
application the first time, more so if the new file extension
hasn't been used before ......

But lets just start off with the "from" "to" question.

the file name format is

xxxxxxxxxxxxx.yyy

the 3 charactors after the doct is file extension which
indicated the file type and is linked by operation system
to a specific program to open that file

say myfile.txt txt mena a text file and your windows
would linked it to notepad, if you click the file, the
notepad will started automatically to open the file.

when you rename a file, make sure dont change the
charactors after the dot, unless you know what you are
doing.

for your file, change it back to the original ending after
the dot, than it would work fine again

Also, the reason you're having this problem now is that you or someone else
must have configured Windows not to hide file extensions in Windows
Explorer. To change this setting, do this:

o Open an Explorer window (such as My Computer or My Documents
o Click the Tools menu and click Properties
o Click the View tab
o In the Advanced settings box, tick the checkbox with the "Hide extensions
for known file types" legend
o Click OK
