The extension determines what application opens the data.
To add to JJ's excellent advice, I suggest that you 'hide extensions for
known file types' by opening any window (like the root of your C drive for
example) and selecting 'Folder Options' from the Tools menu and then
clicking the 'View' tab and scrolling down and making sure that the relevant
box is checked. This way you won't accidentally render a file useless
(though you will always see the warning box, it makes it easier if you hide
the extensions).
One thing though, known file extensions are hidden by default, so you, or
someone else, must have unchecked that box at some juncture.
