Rename PC remotely?

I support 13 remote locations. When we have new people start I like to rename
the PC to reflect that new user. I'm able to add that username to the PC
remotely through "My Computer"/"Manage", but can't seem to find an easy way
to rename the PC.
Any suggestions?

BTW - All PCs and servers are Win2k Pro and Win2k, using Active Directory to
authenticate.

Carlton.

You can do this with remote software like VNC. Since you only need to know
the IP address of the machine to connect to it, you can remove it from the
domain and rename it, and then rejoin it again.

OT, but naming computers after people is a pain & a waste of time.
Workstations are pretty interchangeable. Name them something generic (two
initials for company, two initials for location, + W001, 002, 003, etc) and
use the description field in AD (I'm presuming you use AD) to indicate who
uses what. This is much easier.

I vaguely remember an odd bug that cropped up if the "username" and the
"machinename" were the same when working on a network.

If you're setting up an XP Pro box from scratch, you'll have a problem even
before joining it to the domain (it prompts you to create a local user
account) if the names match. I use a junk/dummy name & then delete that
account afterwards.

Otherwise, this is not a problem. Of course, you aren't using local accounts
anyway, on a domain (or, you shouldn't be), so it's moot.
