Rename my domain

Is it possible to rename the domain. I just upgraded my NT 4 domain to AD
and used the registered Internet name for mycompany "abcdefg.com" and it is
causing a bunch of headaches.

My internal clients get sent to my PDC when looking for abcdefg.com instead
of the site I have on the Internet. Servers that I have multihomed with a
side on the Internet are being addressed on the Internet side IPs by my
remote clients instead of trying to address the internal IPs when connected
with RAS.

If I could rename my domain to abcdefg.net (which we own and are not using)
I figure this will eliminate my headaches.

Too late. You needed to do this BEFORE the upgrade.

Or after reaching ALL Win2003 domain controllers (and selecting Win2003
Forest
Functional Level.)

Yes, and there is not easy way to fix this (minor but irritating) problem
short of
renaming the domain which is only a feature of the highest level Win2003
Forests.

Teach your users to type the WWW or whatever until you are able to upgrade
fully to Win2003.

In fact, just http://www may work just fine also.

Too late. You already burned that bridge but you are in plenty of good
company <grin>

I might chime in for a second.

I very often use the same registered Internet name for my internal AD name.
I have never had a problem with this. There is the one problem - which you
have unfortunately encountered: getting to your company's web site.

I believe that Herb correctly suggested that you simply add a host record
named 'www' ( without the quotes ) in your internal DNS FLZ ( Forward Lookup
Zone ) and enter in the PUBLIC IP Address of your web site ( so it would be
something like 64.58.243.87 or whatever ).

Excellent!!

Luckily I am still in Mixed Mode and have a WinNT 4.0 BDC.
