Rename a network printer

I have custom VB program that looks for a printer with a
name of "dispatch". This is a network printer, but, under
Windows XP Pro, I can't rename the printer. It picks up
the Server address and printers name only. Any ideas?

Hello,

The only way to rename a network printer (a printer you've connected to
through another computer, which is sharing it) is to rename it on the
computer that is sharing the printer (generally the computer that the
printer is plugged into). However, even if you were to name it "dispatch"
on that machine, it would still show up as \\machineName\dispatch on your
Windows XP Pro machine, since it is not a local printer. One option would
be to move the printer so it connects directly to your Windows XP machine
and then name it "dispatch". Otherwise, you may want to change the name
that the VB program looks for.
