Any way to allow me to click on a folder name in order to change the
name without having to right click the folder and select Rename?

(Like in w98)

Select the folder, then press F2 on the keyboard. Type in new name. Press
enter to "lock it in."

PS: If you have one of those infernal F-lock keys (like the one on my
keyboard), don't forget to engage it so that the function keys will work.

It works the same in XP as it did in Windows 98. You might have the single
click option selected in your Folder Options->General Tab. If you have the
Double click option enabled then you simply left click the name of the
folder/file once to highlight, wait a second and then left click it again.
Now you can rename.

If you are set up for double-click to open, left-click once on the name.
Pause a second or two then left-click again and start typing.

Jason Tsang has a couple of .REG files that will allow you to reverse the
default behaviour of the F Lock key.

One will change the default to "Off".

The other will eliminate the F Lock feature totally. This one I use!!

Both have an Undo.REG file with them.

Good suggestion! I've used Jason's REG files before and they're great.
Unless I am remembering incorrectly, these only effect the behavior of the
F-Lock key while working in within Windows. They would work in this case
since the OP wants to rename files without right clicking on them.

I wish they would work before Windows loads. I have to press F-Lock and F8
to get to the advanced start menu. Having something for F-Lock is better
than nothing though. Again, thanks for bringing this up. It's a very good
recommendation.
