I have an "old" computer running XP Home. I'd like to remove it from that computer to install it on a second computer running Win 98SE. What is required? Also, there were hardware issues when I first installed XP such as CD burner and DVD player no longer worked. What is the fix? New hardware or simply drivers?

Install XP on the other computer, when you are asked to activate, you will
be presented with a phone number to call. Tell them what you are doing and
they will give you a new activation code. If it's been more than 120 days
since XP was activated on the previous system, activation may go through the
same as it did after the first install on the previous setup.

Before, installing XP, while at the 98 desktop, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
do not overlook anything as any item to which it points might cause setup to
stop. Also, it might point to issues that could have caused the other
problem about which you speak. Most likely, the problem was outdated CD
burning software on the previous system. Older versions of such software
are not compatible with XP so you need to check with the software
manufacturer for the latest versions compatible with XP and burners with
which their software is compatible.

If it's a retail copy of XP, do exactly as you state above.
Nothingh special is required. On the other hand, if it's an OEM
copy, you can *not* do it.

That's difficult to answer without more information. What was the
fix last time? What hardware, specifically? Usually new drivers
suffice, but it's possible that particular hardware isn't
supported at all.

I bought XP Home to install on an HP Pavilion, which had an HP CD burner. The computer was originally purchased in June, 2000. When I installed XP on that system. the CD burner and DVD player would not work. I think the CD burner would still read CDs, but no longer record. Also a DSL modem would not work, so ended up removing XP from that computer to install it on an older e-machine. Same problems with the e-machine cd burner not working, but I did'nt need that function with that computer, so it was OK. Now want to re-install XP on the HP system. Just wondering if I will then need to update my cd burner hardware too? (No longer use the DSL modem).
