I am trying to format my drive and removed Windows 2000
Professional with NT Technology, I have a firewall
imbedded somewhere and can not use my cable internet. When
I try to format it tells me that it can not lock the
system, please help!!!!

Thank you

Suzie

Boot your machine with the installation CD of your
new operating system. It is likely to have an option
to format your disk.

Yes, restart windows with the first 4 boot discs.

It will ask you whether you want to install Win 2k, repair
etc. Choose clean install. You will then have a partition
list. Press 'D' to delete the partition (then 'L' I
think). Once deleted, recreate the partition & you will
then get the chance to format it in NTFS or FAT, but you
won't have to do that bit with Win 2k setup. What
operating system will you install instead because you want
this setup to format the drive?

Why start with 4 boot disks (which the OP probably
does not have), when she can boot the PC with her
Win2000 CD?

Suzie - Pegasus & crouchie's advice is good. I'd add that

IF the reason you want to shoot W2k in the forehead is that it is giving
you problems all the time,

AND IF W2k was installed by upgrading a pre-existing system,

THEN there's a very good chance you wound up with a flawed W2k from the
beginning.

Upgrades are a very risky proposition and often result in a corrupt W2k.
A clean install (into a newly formatted partition) is the safest way to
install W2k. There are floods of traffic in these newsgroups about
upgrade problems, and the above advice appears frequently.
