We install Windows updates frequently. Can these be
safely removed in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs
screen without losing the effectiveness of the update?

Of course not! Add/Remove programs does exactly what it says on the tin.

Yes.

Type Regedit in Start Run

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Find your thing (prob under KBnnnnnn) and rename DisplayName to something like DisplayNameold.

Sure, then take your clothes off and run around the
neighborhood naked . . . shoot yourself in the foot
too . . .

Greetings --

If you're confident that you won't need to uninstall any of the
hotfixes, you can safely delete the compressed folders storing the
older versions of the relevant files. These folders will be located
at "C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB820291$," for example.

Once you've deleted the folders, you can then open the Control
Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet and select each of the pertinent
removal choices, in turn. You should get an error message stating
that the removal files are missing, and asking if you'd like to delete
the menu option.

Or, as David suggests, you can used the registry to remove the
hotfixes from the display of installed items. His method hides the
hotfixes from display, and has the virtue of still providing the
option of later uninstalling a hotfix by changing the registry entry's
name back to its original.but this method. Of course, this technique
won't free up any hard drive space, if that's a matter of concern for
you.

Specifically, a couple of replies give you ways to eliminate the Hotfix
entries from the Add or Remove section of the Control Panel without
uninstalling the actual change to the operating system WHICH is what I think
you want to do. Without some specific reason, NEVER uninstall one.
