Greetings Jess,
It's up to you which one you want to use and/or remove. However, keep in mind that MSN
Messenger has several features that Windows Messenger does not (see
http://www.msnmessenger-download.com for examples) but if you remove Windows Messenger from
Windows XP, several features (like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing)
will no longer work.
After deciding which one you don't want, do the following (or you can simply just leave both
installed, this is supported also). If you want remove MSN Messenger, simply click Start,
then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger and then click the
'Remove' button.
If you don't want to use Windows Messenger, you can simply disable it (and the Windows
Messenger features within MSN Messenger will still continue to work). To do so, double-click
the Windows Messenger icon in the notification area/system tray (by the clock), click the
Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences, uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts'
(or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts', depending on version), and then click OK.
