Removing watermark

The "Contemporary Fax" template canned with Word 2003 includes what looks
like watermarks or backgrounds, including a gray bar and a map of the
western hemispherre. I tried removing them by selecting all, then clicking
Format | background, and "No Fill"

No luck.

What's the nature of this background, and how can I remove it?
 
View | Header and Footer. Click on the graphic and press Delete.
