If you changed your pc to the Vista file system, then you will have to
wipe the drive clean and start over. Meaning EVERYTHING will be lost!!
If you did not then you can just insert your XP cd and re-install it
into the Windows directory. If you did the normal thing and changed to
the Vista file system, then you will need an external backup of all of
your files you want to keep. Think external hard drive.

hi

I have tried to put in my xp DVD and nothing happened, so im guessing its
changed the file system.

vista has really slowed my Pc down aswell is this normal?

Thanks

Hi

I have McAfee, also use Windows Defender, Adaware.
Why do you ask?
this shouldnt make a difference , Should it?

I have heard of no way to go from Vista to XP without starting from scratch.
That means reformatting and installing XP. Assuming I'm correct you need to
back up your data. (as you will loose everything)
Did you buy the retail version of Vista? Do you have the Vista DVD? If so
you can use that disk to delete the Vista partition. Then XP should be
installable using the XP install CD.
Did your computer ship with XP? As I recall if your computer shipped with XP
you will need an XP CD that is labeled OEM as your XP product key is only
usable with OEM XP CDs. Your XP product key is likely on a sticker on your
computer. After installing XP you may have to call Microsoft to activate XP
as the key may have been retired. But maybe not as major computer venders
often use bulk keys and that would mean that the product key on your
computer sticker is unused.
You will need various drivers on hand before you install XP. The 2 most
important are the chipset and network card drivers. Others you can get after
you are back up and running.
Once you are backed up and absolutely sure you want to revert to XP... use
the Vista DVD to delete the Vista partition. Boot with the Vista DVD. Follow
along and do NOT enter your product key when asked. Continue and look to the
right part of the display for the words "disk manager". (or something
similar... it's been a while since I did this and I'm not sure about the
exact wording) From there you can delete the Vista partition. After you do
that STOP do NOT continue. Remove the Vista DVD and use the XP CD to install
XP. XP will re-format the drive and you're on your way.

If you have a recovery XP CD or hidden partition use that to return to XP.
Consult your computer documentation for details.
If you have no XP media... ask a friend to loan his/hers. It is not a bad
thing to use another's XP install media but you must use your product key.

Reading your original post I am lead to believe your computer is on the edge
of being Vista ready. Spec-wise it sounds like you have a relatively less
than state of the art computer. Most folks revert to XP because of
hardware/software compatibility issues. How long after installing Vista did
you write your post? It does take many hours / a few days for Vista to
settle in. This is mainly due to indexing your hard drive.

Hi

Yeah my PC came with Xp, i have the Xp disc and vista disc, i have tried
what you said, but this hasnt worked.

I use the Vista DVd and get to the point where i select which drive i want
to install the OS on. if i select 'next' Vista starts to install, i dont not
have the disk mangager icon on the right as you said. If i chage disk and
usethe xp on it fails.

In the Vista setup select "Advanced" in the set-up screen you get a extra
menu, from there you are able to delete the partitions. Change the Vista to
the XP setup disk and restart, now you will be able to setup XP again in the
unpartitioned space. Create a partition from the XP setup let it format from
there and do the install.

Ko.

when i promted i select custom install, then im presented with all the
avaiable drives/partitions. But i cant do anything with them.

the only icon i have are 'next' which start to install vista.
Refresh.
Or load Driver?

Is this the screen you are talking about
The only thing i can do is select which drive i want to install windows on.
( ihave a small back up drive) and the main one which has vista on.
I cant get any menus to open, i cant delete the drive.

On the main setup screen there should be a option Advanced. If you select
that, the options to format create or delete a partition become visible. If
you select a partition you would have the option to format delete (or
remove) that partition and create a new one.
