I just want to delete all of them and start over. Third
party codecs and the windows default codecs. I used to
have win ME and it was really easy to delete them. I cant
figure out how to do it in ****ing XP

Hi, only you can tell use what codec you have. Look in your add/remove
programs and any third party codec will be listed.

I would like to remove Stinky's MPEG-2 Codec
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/2/2/11-2-2-40.shtml
...which I installed in XP and which may be conflicting with PowerDVD.

I installed Stinky's codec first, it didn't work with WMP, then I
installed PowerDVD later. There are no instructions with Stinky's
codec for identifying it or removing it.

I went to XP Control Panel, Sounds icon, Hardware tab but I can't
determine which of the codecs listed is Stinky's if it is still there.

I hope that when I installed PowerDVD it overwrote Stinky's MPEG-2
codec, and if so then it isn't necessary to identify it and remove it.

PowerDVD installs a "Cyberlink" MPEG-2 codec. Do you know if
installing PowerDVD 4 will it overwrite, disable or remove any other
MPEG-2 codec it finds?

I know of an expensive solution, which is to purchase and install a
software program called PowerQuest Drive Image ($69), make an image of
the drive, use Control Panel to delete the codecs one by one, and each
time check MPEG-2 playback with the free "GSpot" utility to see which
codec is being used. Then when I know which codec is Stinky's, I can
restore the drive as it was from the PowerQuest image that I made,
and remove just the one codec.

(I thought that XP has the ability to backup the C drive to CDs?)

Another possible solution I've been given is to install ZoomPlayer,
which has a utility that shows what is used for what on playback,
and it will even let me unregister things in its filter manager.
This route could be risky though. I'm looking for a solution that
might be a little easier and less expensive than what I've been given.

HI, Ask the third party for an Uninstall String. You have most likely
downloaded a cracked MPEG-2 Decoder. Click Start>>Run>>Type "DVDUPGRD
/Detect" This should list the MPEG-2 decoder installed and being used.

Email sent to third party requesting this.

I guess I did that.
Click Start>>Run>>Type "DVDUPGRD /Detect"
This should list the MPEG-2 decoder installed and being used.

Doing this shows the "Cyberlink" codec that was installed by PowerDVD.
Here is the question: Does that mean that Stinky's codec is gone or
inoperative? Or could there still be a conflict? MPEG-2 playback is
still freezing up occasionally in PowerDVD, or else it complains that
an MPEG-2 file is non-compliant sometimes when I try to play it.
