Removing user account in windows xp

I have a notebook computer with and admin account and two user accounts.
While signed in as admin I cannot delete the user accounts. When I try I get
a not responding note after a long wait and then a second click of delete
user.

After the second click on delete user and I try to shut down the application
I get an MSHTA.EXE error.

I had a similar problem of deleting users on another neighbors computer but
got and error message and found a bypass of the control panel program to run
from the <start><Run> cmd when I searched the error code. In this case I
don't get an error code to search for.

Any help is appreciated.

You might have a hard disk problem. Click Start/Run/cmd {OK}, then
type these commands:

chkdsk c: /f /r {Enter}
net user xxx /del

The first command will thoroughly check your disk after the next
reboot. The second command will remove user xxx.
