Removing trays from XP SP2 box

HI,

I have an XP SP2 box with 3 HD trays and and I was wondering what is the
accepted way to use them

Can I turn them off and take them out whilst everything is going or do I
have to turn everything off first.

To be on the safe side, I'd turn off the PC and then unplug
the power-cord. But *which* types of trays are they? Is
there a HDD in each of them already? My crystal-ball is
in for repair and without more information it would be
guess-work..

Yes the trays already have working IDe's in them, NOT the OS, but data.

I have had them about 2 years and they have a small fan at back and a
couple have a small key lock at front whilst others have a slide lock.

I have read many times about 'Hot' swapping and for what id o, that
would be great but cannot read anywhere definitely how and when it
should be use.

IDE devices are not hot-swappable

IDE is NOT hotswapable. Shut down the PC to switch the drives.

It is true that IDE by the "default" standards are not "hot
swappable." However, the OP must inquire with the hot swap tray
manufacturer so as to see if the ones the OP has is "hot swappable."
I currently have a PC with two IDE tray that can be "hot swapped"
providing the drives are not being accessed / locked.

So the hardware turns them off and then you exchange them? I would think
the disk cache in XP would still throw a royal fit.

Part of the tray device drivers handle the "hot swap" but there is
only one requirement: XP boot drive must not be on one of these trays.

However, with the SATA drive as the current hardware standard, SATA
has "hot swap" part of the default specs. Same restrictions may apply
(XP boot drive might not be "hot swappable" but I have not set any of
these yet.")

I suspect bootdrive AND the swapfile drive would be off limits with the
SATA too.
