I want to replace the noisy old fan and heatsink on my Socket A Athlon 1.4 -
the wife complains about the noise. Got a Nexus heatsink and fan, great. But
I cannot find any reference as to how I should remove the old thermal
compound that I put on the kernel of my CPU for the old heat sink. Can
anyone help?

I carefully scrape off thermal pads through a rag that has acetone on
it. It takes a little bit, but being careful and using the fingernails
through the rag generally works. I then swap for a clean 'rag' and
polish up the CPU die and heat sink with acetone. Then, I take an
injection alcohol swab (the kinds diabetics buy at the pharmacy) and
give the CPU die and heat sink contact surface a final clean and allow
it to evaporate. I then apply thermal grease in a very thin layer and
attach the heat sink. I follow the same process for a thermal pad or
for thermal grease.
