Removing '$' switch

I am attempting to network my father's Dell (which was originally part of
his corporate network) to my system. However, I have run into a problem when
it comes to file sharing. He is now retired, and no longer has any access to
his old I.T. department, so I am attempting to troubleshoot this myself as
best I can.

I have successfully completed the connection (2 systems peer-to-peer), but,
because his was originally part of a server network (running 2000 Advanced
Server, with workstations running Pro), the C drive is protected by the '$'
switch and I need to know how I go about changing this (receive a message
about not having sufficient permissions, even though I am logged in as the
admin) so I can successfully share the drive, the main reason being that I
have DSL hooked up to my machine and, for the time being, do not want to
share it, but I am about to download SP4 and would download it direct to his
system, via the share, but I can't.

Am I going to have to format the hard drive and start clean (which could be
a problem as Daddy dearest has gone and lost the setup disc and the system
is way out of warranty - it's a P3 500 with 128MB)? There might be one at
the office, but that's in London.

So, how do I remove the switch and set the permissions so I can access and
map the drive?

My system (if it matters - which I'm sure it doesn't) is running XP Pro.

Thanks

The c$ is the default administrator hidden share. $ makes a share hidden. You can
create another share for the drive. In the lower right hand corner of the share
properties box select "new share" to bring up the box to create another share for the
drive and configure permissions to your needs. To access that share properties after
you create it you will have to select the drop down box arrow at the right end of the
share name box. --- Steve
