Removing partition from a HD?

I recently came into an 80g HD that I'd like to use for backup storage.
After installing it I noticed that it was divided into a 60g and 20g
partition.

I formatted both in XP, hoping that maybe that would cause them to combine,
but no dice.

Is there a way to get rid of this partition?

Teoretically it shouldn't matter, but if there's space, I'd leave an empty
slot for better air circulation..
Thanks. Do you know how I should position the new HD in the bay? I
have a few horizontal slots with my current HD sitting at the top. Should
I put the new drive directly under it? Or maybe leave a slot
or 2 blank?

You definitely want air space surrounding each HDD (top and bottom), to
promote cooling. At a bare minimum, I'd suggest 0.25 inch seperation, 3/8"
or more would be even better.

Heat is a major killer of hard drives, which is why, additionally,
installing a fan behind them is also a good idea. Keep them cool and they
will last a _lot_ longer.

You have to run a partitioning program, such as is possible when you run the
XP installation CD. After installing some temporary files the program
offers you the choice to re-partition your harddrive. After that, it allows
you to format.

If it is a Maxtor drive then this free utility from Maxtor works like
a dream and is so friendly. Only one drive has to be a Maxtor for
transferring the whole of your HD to another. You can perform a
variety of tasks with ot including the one you want.

I dare say that if you Google on the lines of say 'Seagate downloads'
or whatever drive you have you may well come up with similar software.
