Removing OS

I had to re-install Win2000 professional because I did not
have the admin password. I did not format c: to save the
old files. However, I do not want the second OS on the
computer anymore (because I cannot get into it). When
starting up, I always have to choose between the two. How
can I not have to make this choice? Or, how can I remove
the "old" Win2000 Pro?

Thanks for your help!

What are the 2 different root directory names? You can do this by editing
the C:\boot.ini file, and deleting the line that points to the now invalid
root directory. Also make sure that the default line matches the one line
that you use to boot.

Thanks for your reply. I looked for the boot.ini file but
did not locate it (anywhere on the hard drive - did a
search for boot.ini). I have found some files
like "ATABOOT" that is called a "SY_file" as the type of
file. This is in the directory "I386". There is also
a "bootok" as an "application" in the directory "WINNTW"
(the folder I created when re-installing the OS). I have
tried to look at some of these using notepad, but they are
unreadable. Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks
for any help!

Hello,
Boot.ini will be in the root of your system partition (probably C:), but
it's a "hidden" and "system" file. To view the file, you'll have to:

- Open Windows Explorer
- Go to Tools / Folder Options / View
- Select "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
- UNselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files" and say "Yes" to the
warning prompt, then OK

The boot.ini file should now be visible.
