I am running my PC with Windows XP SP2 and do regular updates from the MS
site - like many people !.

If I look at the "Change/ Remove programs" list I have about 50 hotfixes and
security update programs shown either against MS Windows XP or MS Office XP.

Why are these there ?

Do they continue to operate many months after they were installed ?

Can they be safely removed ? and if so what are the disadvantages ?

They are security updates that have been released by Microsoft and if you
remove them you will remove the protection they provide and leave your
computer vulnerable to exploits.

They are in the Add/Remove Programs applet in case you have a problem
and need to remove the Hotfix. I have had situations when the computer
would boot into a blue screen after installation and I was able to go
to Safe Mode and uninstall that update.

If you don't like looking at them there is an option box at the top of
the window that allows you to hide the MS updates.

But assuming the update is installed and working and one doesn't intend to
remove, can one safefly delete the $NTUninstall..... folders created in the
windows folder?
