I would like to know how to permanently remove Windows Messenger. I've tried
the add/remove - but it remains and in my Norton activities log I get this
message:

Details: An instance of "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" is
preparing to access the Internet.

every 2 minutes - whether I am online or not. I don't want this program and
I'd like to know how to actually remove it - not just remove it from my
start menu.

Thanks!

You can't actually remove it but can remove any shortcuts to it.
Control panel/add remove programs/windows components/windows messenger -
uncheck and apply etc.
It will appear to be gone entirely.

Hello Alan,

Thanks for the info - so what you are saying is that even though I can
remove it from the start menu and from "seeing" it anywhere - it will still
be there and be trying to establish a connection to the internet
continually. Doesn't seem quite right that resources should be taken up by
something that I really don't want.

Thanks for the help!

Greetings,

Actually you're seeing this message *because* of Norton (not the Firewall, but the
Antivirus!). Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also keep starting. To stop it,
open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger (or Windows Messenger depending on
version) and click OK.

I really wish Symantec would fix this (it's ridiculous, especially when they bundle these two
things together)

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks so much! I made the change as you described - I did have that box
checked. I just installed a newer version of NAV and I started to notice
this in my activity log. I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully this will fix
that particular problem!

Thanks!!

In Windows XP/Control Panel, Open add/remove programs,then select,windows
components (L.sub-menu), then scroll to bottom of page, uncheck the box for
messenger,then close out.

Thanks PM,

That's what I did, but that doesn't uninstall it - it just removes it from
the start menu. It looks like it can't be uninstalled - but the fix
suggested by Jonathan for Norton did help with that the issue I was having.

Thanks again!
