Removing line segment in line chart

I have a line chart with annual values running from 1990 to 2003. Since the the data beginning in 2001 was based on a different assumption, I would like to remove the line segment between the years 2000 and 2001. I can't seem to do this the way I can with the Mac Excel version. Any ideas?

Click on the line you want to change. Wait a second.
Then, click on the segment you want to remove. You should
be able to select a single element of the line. Now,
right-click and change the color to none.

That should work.

In general I'd instruct you to select the series, then just the segment
in question, then press Ctrl+1 (one) to format it. Select None for Line
on the Patterns tab, and you're good.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have tried this already. I've
heard that Excel XP and 2003 do different things to this line, making it
hard to hide.

The workaround in this case is to make two series of data:

Ass-1 Ass-2
1998 57
1999 61
2000 63
2001 95
2002 107
2003 108

Now you have tow series, one for each assumption.

I fail to detect any difference re. hiding line sements in Excel XP.

XP does handle the legend differently though. If there is only one
series, then the (default) legend lists all data points in the one
series instead of just listing "Series 1"

I might be confusing this with the way NA() interpolates between points.
As I said, I don't have XP+, so I am working on hearsay, and I should
learn to keep my mouth shut.

Sounds like XP uses .VaryByCategories = True as the default.

I think we can right click the segment after the segment is selected and
check <none> against line and marker. is this correct?
