Removing "Junk Files" from your system (*.tmp, *.chk, *.bak, etc.)

Hello all:

Over time, lots of "junk files" can accumulate on your system: files
that served a purpose (often very brief) at one time, but that have no
further purpose.

I'd like to know if there is a freeware program that detects file-types
that are often (even if not always) safely removable and then gives you
the option to delete them. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Files of the following types are the kinds I'm thinking of:

*.tmp
*.chk
*.bak
*.cpy
*.^*
*.~*
*.$*
*.__*

[Can anyone add some other file types that are also often-if-not-always
safely removable?]

I have used a demo of a commercial program that works very well in this
regard, but I'd like to see if there is a freeware alternative before
shelling out the $25 or whatever it is. I mean, what such a program is
required to do is really very modest.

The commercial demo I've used is "EasyCleaner":

Not a good idea, some apps may require the data there after a reboot. The cleaning app may delete such data before the other apps
have a chance to read it after rebooting...

It has some pretty stupid claims though, probably aimed at clueless newbies:

"It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster" -- I've
yet to see a system run faster due to removing unused files. If the files are unused,
then the fact of their existence doesn't mean your system will be slower.

"it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run)" -- maybe on a small hard drive
without much data. I doubt it'd clean my 200 GB drive of unused files in one second.

I know what you mean Diplomatic Immunity, but in 7 years of using
that command, never had a problem.

More here on the different operating system & levels of cleaning.

I suggest unchecking cleaning of index.dat files. Otherwise, when you
try to install Windows Updates and some other programs, they will say
that there are pending installs that must be completed first. I
believe this is due to the task created to clean index.dat files,
which can only be done on a reboot. Otherwise, it's terrific.

Also, I don't believe it cleans the registry when you have it set to
run automatically, just the temp and other files. Someone please
correct me if I'm wrong.

I have yet to see that actually happen. I install all kinds of
programs to try them out and have never had that problem (using
Win2K). I notice the program default to only delete Windows\Temp files
older than 48 hrs. Not sure how many program installs use that folder
rather than the Document and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp
folder.

Thank you all for these wonderful responses! Some really outstanding
suggestions! I will not be paying for the commercial software
mentioned in the first message!

Thanks again.

Slightly OT ; yesterday i was in C:\windows\ (daily excursion :)
and typed "newcom" (not bad)

so with DIR /OS you have all your files sorted, and i just
post a WARNING for MICRO TREND online anti-virus users
(this service used to be free, now it's less..), that this service
stores on your PC very big pattern files, in C:\windows. So
if you wonder where your MO are gone, they are in pattern files
about 12, 15 Mo, and a small 3 Mo.
