Removing IE 7 Beta Caused Problems

I do not know if this is the proper forum for this problem, but it concerns the IE 6 browser indirectly.

Here is what happened: being in an advenbturous mode awhile back, I decided to try out the beta release of IE 7, so I downloaded it and installed it on my WinXP Pro system replacing IE 6. Well, to make a long story short, it cause quite a few problems, so I removed it by using System Restore to return my PC to the earlier state before the IE 7 upgrade (because I was not sure if I could trust the IE 7 remove options in Add/Remove, due to the other problems I was having like system hangs etc). That worked, and I was back to my pre-IE 7 state but for one.... well, problem, although it is more of a "missed" fix, it is not really hurting me AFAICT.

Now that I am back to the original state, I still look in the Add/Remove programs list and see the listing for IE 7 Beta, rather than my current IE version (although I am not sure if the current IE ver. 6 is even supposed to be listed). When I selected REMOVE from that IE 7 listing, it pops up a dialog saying that just about everything that ever was installed on my PC was installed after this IE 7 package, including all of the Windows builtin apps etc. Well, of course that is not so, actually, I did not install IE 7 until just a short time ago long after all the Windows stuff and very little was added afterwards, until after I did the restore to my present state.

But, fearing to go farther, I stopped. Is there any way to tell what this listing in AddRemove is looking at? The little popup balloon for the item says it is for IE 7, not IE 6. But IE 7 is long gone. Any weay to sort this out and get it corrected?

Well, this problem is not really one with IE 7 beta, is it? It seems more to be a problem with the AddRemove CPL function. In any case, I can post this particular item if you think it is of interest to them, but I really do not recall the details of the exact problems I had, other than system hangs and such which prompted me to want to revert back to my IE 6. I am content to wait until the first production rel of IE 7 before trying it further (I was pretty happy with some of the new stuff like tabs).

AFA the version I am now using, it is for sure my original pre-IE 7 version 6.0.<yada yada>. That is what the About dialog shows, and it is the one I started with, so that is not in doubt. The SysRestore did put me back, but somehow it "missed" the AddRemove stuff.

OK I will repost this problem to the other forum.

Hi Pete :-)

That's good, you now have the actual IE6 back. As for the Add/Remove part,
as you did the System Restore in place of the uninstall of the IE7 from the
Add/Remove Programs as is the suggested method or removal, it just may be
that all the files have been removed via the SR, but, you still have the
Title for IE7 in the A/R list. You might also check with the folks in the
IE& about removing that, but, until you can be sure, I don't suggest just
deleting it until you check with the team there for the confirmation.
