Is there a way to remove extinct icons from the "Add/Remove Programs"
menu in the Control Panel? In most cases, when I uninstall, the icon
will disappear with the application, however in some cases the icon
hangs on. Thoughts?

TIA,

These entries are stored in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
registry key.

ALWAYS be careful when editing the registry. Make a backup
of it before you proceed.

How do I get to that directory ? Is it accessible via Windows
Explorer ?

Thanks,

It's not a directory, it's a registry key.

Click Start > Run > type "regedit" (without quotes) and hit
enter.
The registry editor interface is similar to Windows Explorer.
Navigate to that key. DO NOT DELETE the entire uninstall
key. Just delete the keys that you want removed from the
Add/Remove Programs list.

Make a backup of the registry before you delete anything,
here's how:
