Hi,

We have a server here with Active Directory (it's not the "master"
server), and Exchange 2000 running on it. We want to uninstall both of
these things, so we can take it off the network.

What do we need to do, in what order, and why?

More details upon request - not sure what you need

Sorry for the cross-post. Not familiar with these groups, not sure
where to post.

Thanks,

You need to uninstall Exchange and then DCPROMO the server back down to a member
server.

Actually you multi-posted. If cross posted, a response in one group would
show up in all groups you posted in, which would have been easier for you.

Anyway, you'll need to remove Exchange first, then demote the DC. I cannot
find the article that describes this, but take my word on it until I can
find it for you. I just did this two months ago for a client.

Are you upgrading or installing another Exchnage server? If so, and you want
to save your mailboxes and public folders, these should help (ame for 2000
and 2003):

This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and

If you are having difficulty in reading or finding responses to your post,
instead of the website you are using, I would suggest to use OEx (Outlook
Express or any other newsreader of your choosing), and configure a newsgroup
account, pointing to news.microsoft.com. This is a direct link into the
Microsoft Public Newsgroups, and it is FREE and DOES NOT require a Usenet
account with your ISP. With OEx , you can easily find your post and watch &
track threads, sort by date, poster's name, watched threads or subject.

Not sure how? It's easy and you'll enjoy it

Whoops - you're quite right. I'm not used to this Google Groups stuff,
in addition to being unfamiliar with these newsgroups... too late now.
The information in your signature should be on the Microsoft website
somewhere - or at least, I didn't see it? I gave up and decided to use
Google instead. I'm now in a rich client, and I'll keep this for future
reference.

We have 3 DC's, one offsite, and two onsite here. The one we're trying
to get rid of used the server for a third site, which was merged into
this site.

All mailboxes, I think everything, all public folders... all on the main
server for this site now (odyssey03). We're removing odyssey02 from the
network, so we'll be left with two DC's both running AD and Exchange 2k.

I believe I thought the info was on Microsoft's site, but I can't find it.
If I do, I'll post back or put it in my signature for future reference. The
important thing is you found this place!

Ok, so if all the mailboxes and public folders have been removed, then you
can simply run Exchange setup and opt to remove (uninstall) it off the
machine. If it is a DC, of course as I stated, and Joe as well, that
Exchange must be removed first before demoting it.

I hope that helps,
Ace

Slightly OT, Ace, but what happens if a DC with Exchange on it crashes?
Are you faced with a restore then a removal?

Cheers,

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Good question, and possibly not really off topic, depending on the poster's
view. There are a number of ways to do it, depending on type of crash,
whether it was it just the drive or the whole server.

If a harddrive crash and you have a good backup of the whole machine, and
depending on the backup software (like Veritas), you can do a bare-metal
restore. If not, you can install reinstall Windows the new drive giving it
any name you want, then restore the system state and regular backup
(assuming you backed up the Exchange installation folders, except the logs
and databases, which an Exchange backup takes care of) and make sure it
comes back up.

Exchange is another issue and depending on how you backed up Exchange, and
if you backed up the. If you backed up the Exchange files, of course restore
them, and once that is done, you can run the Exchange restore and then run
Exchange setup with the /disasterrecover switch.

That's pretty much in a nutshell, but it all depends on how it was backed
up. Keep in mind when backing up a combo DC and Exchange, or even if
Exchange is on a member server, always backup the system state as a separate
backup job and not combined with an Exchange backup. Do that as a separate
backup job and offset the schedule so they don't run concurrent.

I hope that helps. Of course I welcome any comments, suggestion or
ommittions, or even any corrections for any errors I may have made.

:-)
