Does removing the drive letter destroy the partition or can a letter
then be assigned a long time later after many reboots

removing the drive letter from where?
you can change drive letters in disk management which is part of
admin/tools, computer management, however care can be taken because changing
drive letter can upset application paths etc etc..

your best bet is to use an application like parition magic its built in
'drive mapper' facility if you're going to mess around with drive letters,
but i don't understand your question about reboots????

i don t want to change the drive letters, i want to remove some of them
without destroying the partition
