Hi

Further to previous message, I am in a difficult situation. We have bought a
company and they came with their servers. Their domain was "myserver.com".
As for us, we were not under a domain considering our structure. I
therefore would like to change "myserver.com" into "myserver1.com" (these
are not the real names). I however need to keep the accounts on the
"myserver.com" and to migrate all this to "myserver1.com".

Thanks

The simplest way to do this would be to create a new domain called
myserver1.com and migrate the accounts from the myserver.com domain with
ADMT.

Hello Kangoo

to move objects between trees use the movetree command line until at the old
domain

ok tx. I dunno if you read my previous thread, but I wanted to create
another domain. My problem is that first of all I don't know much about
Active Directory and it seems not to be possible to create another domain at
the same level, unless I am wrong. I tried to do so with dcpromo, but the
server I am using is already a domain controller for myserver.com, and I
want it to be a domain controller for myserver.com and myserver1.com, at
least for the moment. Then in a few months I will migrate all the data
under myserver.com into myserver1.com (when the company's merge is
definite). I don't know if I am quite clear but I get a bit confused with
all this new stuff.

Tx

A domain controller can only be a DC for one domain at a time so that plan
will not work I'm afraid. What you could do though is create a new domain at
your company within the same existing forest as the new company. eg. create
a mysite.mycompany1.com domain. This has the drawback that you would never
be able to get rid of the mycompany1.com domain as it would be the forest
root. For these type of company mergers I reckon your best option is to
build a pristine forest from scratch at your own office and then migrate the
users from mycompany1.com when the merger goes ahead.

movetree can only be used to move objects between different trees within the
same forest. If I understand the scenario correctly we have two separate
companies with separate forests so you could not use movetree in this case.

HI,

You said "What you could do though is create a new domain at your company
within the same existing forest as the new company". You mean on another w2k
server ? The problem is that our company did not have a W2k server and we
only had a few computers in a workgroup, which was at that time sufficient.

So the only machines I have running under W2k Servers are the PDC and SDC.
And as far as I understand you a same server cannot be a dual domain
controller, each for one domain. So if we have 4 domains, we need 4 W2k
serever machines if the domains are of type W.com, X.com, Y.com and Z.com.

I just need a few hints about HOW TOes:
- which tool is used to create a forest as you mentioned in your message and
subdomains ?
- do you websites which give step by step procedures ?

Regards

Simon is right, I haven't followed the whole thread but ADMTv2 can do the
migration.

/Jimmy
