I applied a design template to a master slide and would now like to remove it
so as to have no design template when I am done. Suggestions. PowerPoint 97

All presentations have a design template. You can't have a presentation w/o
one. But some use a blank template (the template you get by default when you
start a new presentation).

If you don't see a blank template (blank.pot or blank presentation.pot) file on
your computer, you can easily create one: start a new blank presentation, then
choose File, Save As; choose Design Template (*.POT) in Files of Type, give it
a name and save.

Then apply it to your existing presentation.

Is it just the slide background that you want to get rid of? I ask because a
template also controls the font(s), font size, placeholder placement, etc. If
all you want to do is get rid of the background and leave everything else as is,
you can go to View > Master > Slide Master. Then go to Format > Background and
click on the color box and set the color to white.
