I am implementing a locked down local policy for a
handful of xp workstations. I don't mind if the users
change the wallpaper but I would like to block the use of
the customize desktop feature as I have all these
features predetermined.

I have looked for a reg hack or policy option but with
little sucess.

Any advice appreciated

JK

Dear JK,

Thank you for your post.

Can you let me know the detailed steps you performed to configure the local
policy? Also, are the end users local admins? I will carry out tests on my
lab. Thank you for your cooperation and I look forward to hearing from you.

Have a nice day!

I have just selected local policy changes for the user
configuration. For the display properties I have
basically removed the themes tab and forced a screensaver
and timeout (user config/admin templates/control
panel/display). I tried the secure desktop option from
the other reply and this just removes the desktop cleanup
wizard. My inttentions are to get the customize desktop
button of the desktop tab either removed or greyed out so
that it can not be edited.

I tried this but this leaves the option there and just
removes the cleanup wizard which can be disabled via
local policy. I do not want users to be able to add or
change desktop items

Hello JK,

Thank you for clarifying this issue. I have performed further research, but
unfortunately I did not find a specific setting that would help us disable
the "Customize Desktop" button. To be honest, based on my experience, not
every button in Windows has a related policy setting or registry entry to
disable it.

With regards to this issue, do you think that disabling the whole Desktop
tab might be a viable workaround? I understand that it may be a little
inconvenient for the end user to configure the wall paper.

After hiding the Desktop table, the end user can use some utilities (for
example, ACDSee or the built-in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer) to
customize the wallpaper.

I hope the above information helps. Thank you for using our news groups.
