Hi all -

I have two computers running WinXP Pro networked through a linksys router .
How can I remove them both from the network?

Thanks in advance.

That depends on what you mean by "remove them both from the network".

You can physically disconnect them from the router, but I assume that
you want them connected to get Internet access.

To prevent the computers from seeing each other on the network, enable
the Internet Connection Firewall on their local area network
connections, as shown here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

If that interferes with their Internet access through the router,
disable the firewall and un-check these network components in the
local area network connections' Properties:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

If none of that does what you want, please post a news group reply
with more information.

Thanks Steve!

Unchecking those components seemed to work. I was experimenting trying to
set up a home network and couldn't get it to work. Both computers could see
each other but when I double clicked to access either, I kept getting an
error. It was frustrating so I just wanted to undo the entire thing. I
tried system restore but no restore points were created in the last few
days.

You're welcome. I'm glad that I was able to help you to get your
network not to work. ;-)

If you ever want to get it working, try re-checking those components
and then running the Network Setup Wizard on both computers to fully
enable file sharing. Tell the Wizard that they connect to the
Internet through a "residential gateway". That might be all that's
needed.

Steve,

I finally got the network up and running thanks to your suggestion of
turning off the firewall.
I mapped a network drive (Z) for a shared folder to an excel file. The
other computer can access the folder if I go into the my network places and
navigate to the shared folder. Why doesn't the Z drive show up in windows
explorer or the drop down list box when i go to open the file in excel?
Does each computer have to be mapped?

Thanks in advance,
Newtechie
