Retail boxed Athlon 64's are shipped with the heatsink/fan assembly
separate from the cpu chip. Once assembled into the socket can they
later be removed as a unit for use in a different motherboard?

On artic silver.com, there are instructions for cleaning the "stuff" off.

No. The heat sink is too big to lift the cpu socket lever.
You have to be very careful in both assembly and dis-
assembly. I put a little more than necessary heat goop
on the cpu when assembling. That doesn't hurt anything
because the goop flows and thins out in a few minutes.
Later ( up to a year ), I can disassemble the unit by
carefully wiggling the heat sink until it releases from
the cpu .. exposing the release lever.

Good luck with that, I had a terrible time getting the heat sink on the cpu,
it is the one that came with it, boxed amd.

I suspect getting it off will be a nightmare.

Radio Shack white thermal goop cleans up easy and the
heatsink don't stick.
