I am having Windows XP. There is a bootup password installed by the
technician at my request, to prevent others from using my computer in my
absence. Now I have to leave for a 10 day trip and wish to make the computer
available for my family to use. How can I remove the password and have the
computer bootup and restart without the need for a password? I am not that
good on computers and I would appreciate instructions and steps in basic
form.
Thanks

It depends where the password is set. If nothing at all can even start
without a password then the password is set in the BIOS, enter the BIOS
(aka setup) and remove the password. If you can't do it just give them
the password before you leave then you can change it or remove it later
if you want.

Go to Start button->Settings->Control Panel->User accounts->select your
Account. From the options list choose "Remove my password". You will need to
enter your password and then click the button.

When you return home revisit this and create a password if you so desire.

Thanks for your quick response. At the options at my account it states
"create password". There is no "Remove my password". So it sems my password
is not there but somewhere else, maybe in the BIOS. How do I get there and
how do I proceed then? Pls give me in simple steps. At present I have to
insert password about halfway thru the bootup or restart.
Thanks

From your description, it would seem that you set a password in the
BIOS and not in XP. This means that you must enter a password before the
operating system (Windows) can start. There may also be a password for
Setup (the BIOS configuration program) itself. When you start your
computer, there will be a message like "Press [some key] to enter
Setup". The key press differs from motherboard to motherboard so you
will either have to read your manual, ask the tech who set it up, or pay
attention to what is written on your screen as the system is starting.

If you are asked for the password to get into Setup, type it in. Once in
Setup, disable the requirements for passwords. Most often you will find
this under a Security heading. Do not change anything else in the BIOS
Setup.

When exactly in the start up process do you have to enter the password? What
does the screen look like?

Sorry for the delay. Was sick in hospital. I have already old you that I
have to insert the password halfway thru bootup. The screen is all black. It
is before windows can start. I believe the password was placed in the BIOS
by the technician. I need to know how to get to BIOS and what are the steps
to take then.
Thanks

OK, I will do that before I go on the trip. When I return I will have to
reinstate the password back in. Would the process be the reverse of what you
have just told me?
Thanks
