I am a newbie running a win 2000 network
3 x Advanced win2000 servers each with AD installed.
1 x Advanced win2000 server without AD

I wish to take 1 server out of line permanently - this has DNS installed on
it.

What steps should I take so that the rest of the network will continue to
function correctly?
How do I check to see which computer has the global directory?

First install DNS on one of your other DCs (AD Needs a Dynamic DNS server),
wait for the data to replicate, then run Dcpromo on the server to be removed
and it will automatically transfer any roles that server might hold.
And I assume you mean Global Catalog Server, you can check this in "AD Sites
and Services" under the NTDS properties for the servers in your site.
