How do I delete/remove a file in Word 2002?

Open the folder in Windows Explorer and delete it.

You can also use File > Open, and then select the file, and click the Delete
icon at the top of the Open dialog.

I can only see the file listed on the right side in Word
where it says open a document.

Well the two options I listed are still available, as well as clicking
"More..." (to get the File Open dialog) in the right hand pane.

Do you understand what Windows Explorer is, or how to use the menus in Word?

If you've already deleted the file and just want it not to appear on the
task pane, you can accomplish this by deleting it from the MRU list at the
bottom of the File menu. Press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen (the mouse pointer will
change to a big minus sign) and click on the filename. Be careful with this
shortcut, as it will remove *any* menu item you click on, but it is "used
up" after one use, and you can dismiss it with ESC if you press it in error.
