Hi

I have been given a second hand windows xp based machine, seemed to be
running a bit slow. I checked the registry (as several web sites suggested)
and found an entry for this update, suggesting that it had been used.
However, when I try and remove the update using add/remove programs there is
no listing for 811493.

My questions are:
1) Is the update still 'active' in anyway?
2) or has 811493 already been removed?
3) If not how can I remove it?

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

Have a look in Windows Explorer to see if there is a Windows\$NtUninstallQ811493$\spuninst folder. If there is, double click on the spuninst file there to remove that Update.

Is there any way of determining if I have the original ver of this patch or
the revised version?

When uninstalling an XP patch are there any "rules of thumb" that will
prevent problems...ie like if the patch I want to uninstall is in the middle
of the heap, is it gonna shake things up if I pull it out of there ;-)

thanks,
kristin

If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do with it
is reinstall the operating system. You have no idea how the
computer has been maintained, what has been installed
incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses there may be, etc. I
wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and problems,
and I wouldn't recommend that anyone else do either

This is very sound advice. Just make sure that you can find all the
drivers for your computer components before following it.

What if the original CD was not passed on?

If you do remove a patch, create a System Restore point first in case
something goes wrong.
