If you only remove the policy the settings will still stay. So set the policy
back to default before removing it and the setting will like you want. In
your case create a new one with the settings again and then remove the setting
before removing the policy.

Like mentioned earlier, you have to change the setting before either
removing the policy or setting it to not defined.
The setting has to be changed to a different value and not just set to
not defined.
As you noticed, the settings stay put until the settings have been
changed. By removing the policy, or setting it to not defined does
not alter the setting already in place.
Create another GPO with the settings that you wish to remove and then
change the settings to what you wish. Once the settings are set to
your liking, you can then either remove the policy or set the
configured settings to not defined.
