Judy,

Based on the "Subject" lines you mentioned, I can say they are SPAM. Not only SPAM, they contain viruses [w32.Swen]

You may want to read this as well:

Microsoft *NEVER* distributes software via email. The mail which you received is not from Microsoft, though the from address says so.

Please go through: Microsoft Policies on Software Distribution:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

NOTE: If you receive an e-mail that claims to contain software from Microsoft, do not run the attachment. The safest course of action is to delete the mail altogether. If you would like to take additional action, report the e-mail to the sender's Internet Service Provider. Most ISPs provide an "abuse" userid for this purpose.

Also, never give your actual email id in the newsgroup.

Thanks for your reply, which I have read. How do I actually stop them from
coming though, and how can I re-instate the attachments that Outlook Express
deemed necessary (from my friends)?

If you are sure that the attachment is safe to download or open [sent by your friends], use the following method:

Turn off the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus option:

Start Outlook Express.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Security tab, click to clear the Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus check box under Virus Protection, and then click OK.

329570 - Cannot Open E-Mail Attachments in Outlook Express After You Install SP1:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329570

As for prevention of Spam, use message rules in OE or use the junk filter option [if available] provided by your email service provider.

Also, use a good anti-virus software and enable email scanning. You can get AVG Anti-virus free from www.grisoft.com

Judy,

One additional problem is the fact that you have posted to a public
newsgroup using what looks like a real e-mail address.
This will result in your address being harvested automatically by SPAMers
worldwide and you will continue to receive potentially large quantities of
unsolicited and Junk/SPAM e-mail to this address.

Please see
http://www.microsoft.com/security/articles/spam.asp
and also

Thanks for this Mike - I have been away, and have only just found this
message from you. Im reading what you say, that I have posted to a public
newsgroup using what looks like a real e-mail address. Im not sure what Im
doing wrong though. How can I post to a group without using an address???

Judy,

The newsreader you are using is Outlook Express.
Go to Tools... Accounts ... click on the News tab
Highlight the account for access to your news server and then press the
Properties button.
On the General tab change the e-mail address so something that is not valid
etc.
