Removed Domain Controller still resolves after removal

DNS shows no entry and we discontinued the use of WINS several months ago. I
have stopped and started DNS, restarted the DCs multiple times, and manually
flushed DNS on DCs and I still get this removed server resolving when I ping
it by name. This DC had to be carved out of AD due to failed hardware. Did
something get missed and that "tendril" is still lingering?

have you checked the hosts file on the server you can resolve from?

Yeah, the file is just the default template. We have rarely had any need to
populate a hosts file on any device. In the 8 years I have been here, we have
used a hosts file once that I am aware of, and then it was for a
troublshooting test for a couple of hours.

No, it errors out like one would expect trying to resolve it via FQDN.
