I receive this error when I swap my removable drives.
They are just used for backup, no os on them. I swap them
by disabling it in device manager, take out the drive,
have device manager check for hardware changes, XP sees
it gone, I put the second drive in, scan for hardware
changes, new drive is found, I enable it, and it works
fine.
In the event viewer I see this error though. What, if
anything, am I supposed to be doing to prepare it for
removal?

The device 'Maxtor 51024U2'
(IDE\DiskMaxtor_51024U2__________________________DA620CQ0
\324b4230424d4336202020202020202020202020) disappeared
from the system without first being prepared for removal.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

(And there's no additional information at the link.)

Thanks for any info on the subject.

Just ensure that there is nothing that could be using it. If the entry
in Device Manager covers 'Disable Write behind caching' it would be as
well to use that.

The comment is really that the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tool has not
been used to ensure that there is no pending data transfer (or worse,
one in progress). But unless the drive is seen as a removable media
device, that will not appear (in the taskbar) anyway
