Otto Moehrbach

I just reformatted and reinstalled everything. Now when Windows comes
up it displays a screen with all the users' names and asks me to select
mine.
This is a stand-alone computer in my home. I am the only user so my name
is the only one to choose from.
When I initially installed XP this same thing happened. At that time I
was told, in one of these newsgroups, to go to the Control Panel - User
Accounts and remove any users other than me and guest. I did and it worked.
But now, the guest and I are the only accounts shown in User Accounts.
What can I do to eliminate that opening screen? Thanks for your help.
Otto

Have you tried turning the guest account off?

To do this go to control panel, user accounts then click
on guest then click turn guest account off

Simon
I appreciate your help but the Guest account is off already. Thanks
again. Otto

I tuned off both the "fast user switching" and "Use the Welcome Screen".
That took away the Welcome screen. Now I have the logon screen. My name is
already in it and I have no password, so all I have to do is click on it.
Maybe I'm just getting lazy in my old age, but is there a way to get rid of
that screen also? Thanks for your help. Otto

You're an idiot. Why would you delete accounts that you don't know about. You are so irresponsible.,

Type in Start - Run
control userpasswords2 and clear Users Must Enter A Name.

What brought on the "idiot" part in your response? Also, what brought
on the "Why would you delete accounts that you don't know about."? I didn't
express any desire to delete any accounts, known or not. I was just wanting
to delete some opening screens that have no purpose in my use of the
program. Not in your use. In mine.
Thanks for your help. Your idea with the "control userpasswords2" did
the trick. Thanks again. Otto

Otto,
You have to ignore Mr. Candy.
He has a reputation for being rude and obnoxiouse for no good reason.
It's best to just kill file him and leave it at that.

You said in relation to other accounts that you deleted them.

People keep refusing to use windows as it was designed. Most non bug posts here are of people who wilfully refuse to operate windows as designed.

If I was in charge you would not have any settings to change. MS refuses to be firm on these issues, they prefer to lead but permit compatability modes.

I've always thought the Mac is the way to handle the system (you can't access individual files) and Win CE the way to go for user interfaces (almost no settings to change).

I'm in the aeronautics field. One thing we learned, somewhat painfully at
times, is that we can change the aircraft but we can't do squat about the
person.
In short, you can design the machine to be compatible with the person,
you cannot do visa versa.
Remind me to never buy any software you designed. But I still thank you
for your help. You were very helpful to me. Otto

Otto,

You need to configure Windows XP to Automatically Login

Solution 1:
Click Start, Run and type "control userpasswords2", and click Ok.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
option, and click Ok.

Solution 2:
If you have one user account and no password configured, Windows XP will log
you in automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do the following:
Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.

Download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).
Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon.
Turn on the Log on automatically at system startup option, type your
username and password, and click Ok.

The best way I did it with my computer was to install XP Powertoys. There
is an autologon feature with it that you may like.

What brought on the "idiot" part in your response?

I believe he was responding to another poster, not to you.

Thanks for that information. It did the trick.
Now I have one problem left. The closing screen. In my previous XP
installation, when I click Start - Shut Down I would get a box with 3
buttons, Standby, Shutdown, and Restart. Now I get a box with a drop-down
list of choices. I have to scroll the list to get to my choice. How do I
get my old box back.
Thanks again for your help. Otto

Otto,

You have fast user switching, welcome screen disabled. Enable then.
Start/Run/ "Control Userpasswords"
