remove unwanted apps

I am looking to tighten things up on user
desktops. I am looking for a system management tool
that not only inventories software on each workstation
but also can remove unwanted applications from all
desktops. For example, I want to review workstation
inventory (from the comfort of my desktop) and than
zap AOL IM on any workstation that has it instaled. We
are a pure W2K environment (servers & w/s). Is this
something that W2K can accomodate natively or do you know
of any good tools that can accomodate this
objective?

I would suggest you investigate products such as SMS,
which can collate inventory information (not sure
inventory can be used as a verb :)

You may then need to use a software metering app to stop
access to the app itself, or maybe execute a script which
removes the offending app if found.

The issue will be knowing how to remove an app when found.
i.e. do you just remove files and reg keys or invoke the
correct uninstall routine? Was it installed using MSI or
InstallShield or .... etc etc?

We use Altiris Deployment Server, which is working well
for us so far. It is AD-integrated and allows you to
inventory workstations, deploy software remotely, etc..
Easier to set up than SMS, too. E-mail me if you have any
specific questions, and I'll try to help.
