remove the +1 before area code

you mis-understood. I know I can go through each contact one by one and
delete the +1, I'm asking how I can change a setting to where it eliminates
the +1 in each contact all at once.

Once a contact has the +1 you need to remove it from each one - one at a
time. You could export to Excel and use search and replace to speed it up if
you have a lot, but that can introduce problems of its own.

I understood what you posted completely. You didn't post any detail. There
is no setting that changes existing Contacts--only new ones. Do what Diane
suggested. You might want to ponder over how the country codes got there in
the first place if you don't want them. That's the setting you should
change.
