Remove text box?

I am composing flash cards and word lists as part of a reading curriculum. I have been using a text box above a letter to insert a numeral (like 2) or a symbol (like a smile). If I want to erase this insertion after I have gone to a different word, I am unable to select the insertion or change it in any way. What should I do to be able to edit my symbols that I have inserted within a textbox, and then maneuvered to exactly above the letter I wish to change?
Thank you for any help you can give.
Sincerely, nmeacham

Pop up the drawing toolbar, and use the selection tool there to select the
element.

Thank you for your comment. However, I can't seem to find the selection tool in the drawing toolbar. I have Windows XP. Would you be able to humor me and tell me where to find it? By the way, sometimes when I click on the text box text, it is selected, but sometimes it is not and I don't know why.

The selection tool is the (white) arrow head at the left hand end of the
Word drawing toolbar.
Click on the edge of the text box.
