Under "My Network Places" (Why not just "Network Places", or "Network
Neighborhood"?) are Three inscrutible categories. Microsoft Terminal
Services, Microsoft Windows Network, and Web Client Network. They are there
even when there isn't yet a network.
I don't know why Microsoft Terminal Services is there. What is it? Can I
get rid of it?
I don't know why Web Client Network is there. What is it? Can I get rid of
it?
I don't know how my network became Microsoft's Windows Network. In win 98,
when Network Neighborhood was expanded, it listed - I know this is too simple
- the machines I have on my network. Now I don't see them until I open
someone else's network. This category just makes the directory tree one layer
deeper. Can I get rid of it?

You can Hide My Network Places from showing in Explorer. I have a Home PC
with 56k dialup modem, and this folder was useless for me. So I set the
registry bit that hides it permanently.

I have no need to hide Network Places since I have a desktop and laptop
networked. (In fact I doubt that the laptop has ever been used away from the
network.)

But, it is interesting to know that one can hide a folder by a registry
entry
1. What is the entry ?
2. Could it be done just as easily by setting the folder to "Hide" and then
setting "Do not display hidden folders" ?

To hide My Network Places from Explorer
a.. Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}\ShellFolder

a.. In the right-pane, create a new REG_DWORD value named Attributes, if not already present. If present, rename for backup
b.. Double-click Attributes and assign it's data 20180000

To undo the changes, delete the Attributes value, and rename the backup version back to Attributes.

Don't do what I did ... backup the current Attributes Value by Renaming to something else, prior to modifying. Just in case, like I needed, you need to go back.

Method 1:
Hide "My Network Places" from Windows Explorer view:

That's great Ramesh and Larry

I was sort of wondering about other folders. Do they all have an obscure
number or are some known by name

Is there as sytem, a pattern that can be learned, or does a person need to
have special knowledge for each individual key?

Ok, quite amazing. When I asked this question, I wanted to hide two folders
that do not seem to have any use to me, Microsoft Terminal and Web Client.
People who need them know what they are. I am clueless and for me they just
add clutter. I would like them to disappear them.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order
[Backup the key to a REG file and have it in a safer place. You need this
file to Undo the changes.]

Then in the right-pane, double-click "ProviderOrder" and set
"LanmanWorkstation" as its data.

Close Regedit.exe
