my computer user name appears automatically in every comment form (right
click on cell>insert comment). i have tried deleting computer registration,
but it hasn't changed. i don't want to see my name in every comment . it's
pointless. where in the registry (or elsewhere) can i go to delete it? so
that i can start with a blank comment.

thanks dave, i figured out how to produce 2 of the scripts. one to change
the text to " ". which left me with a : and cursor on second line. and the
script for making a blank comment.

so it seems that excel is not so stupid that it can't produce a blank
comment, it's just that MS is autocratic, presuming that it knows better
than the users what they should want. no surprise there.

so the question remains. how to make excel produce blank comments on a
regular basis. i can't be going into macro for each comment and writing
script . or making a script for each new spreadsheet.

is there a way to do this?

Put the code into your personal.xls workbook -- so you can use the macro in any
workbook.

You could even assign the macro a shortcut key combination to make it easier to
run.

help told me that the only way to use vb was in the vb editor, with a
"module". running the module from there does what i need, but, i have
searched help and experimented, but i don't see any way to save the module.
i exported it to desktop but that doesn 't seem to help. i have never used
macros in excel. a button that appears with all spreadsheets would be better
than a shortcut key.

problem solved. someone came by who knew how to save the module and create a
button to activate the macro.

i have to leave security on low. otherwise macros are disabled or i get a
warning every time i open a spreadsheet. kinda dumb, excel warning me about
a macro that it made.

At work, I have that setting on Low. At home, it's medium.

I figure that I don't use unknown workbooks at work. So Low is ok. At home,
I've opened workbooks that I probably shouldn't--so I like that prompt.

There is s self certification process you can use (I don't bother) that could
make you a trusted user.

You can look at Excel's help for more info:
Look for "Create your own digital certificate"

right. i am going to try the selfcert and see how it goes. in any case,
since i have anti virus running it shouldn't be a problem.

thanks for you help. based on the script that you sent me to and the help
from a friend i know have a toolbar button that opens a blank comment box,
ready to be typed in. actually easier than the standard right click method.
annoyance solved.

Be careful.

I don't think any antivirus program can determine if a macro is malicious.
