There are items that start automatically when my computer
is turned on... I want to use the programs, but only when
I want to. How can I stop them from starting
automatically?

Thanks in advance - Nina

The best choice is to go into each individual programs settings/options and
find the "load when Windows starts" option (or words to that affect) and
disable.

If You are unable to find such a setting click Start> Run and type in
Msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and you can uncheck programs you don't want
to start with Windows.

Go to Start|Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Click the
'Startup' tab. This shows everything that is starting up at boot and the
startup location. You can uncheck these items but it is better to go to the
startup location and eliminate them from there. Also occasionally by
right-clicking the icons it will give you a Preferences option that you can
go into an uncheck automatic start but if you aren't given that option then
go into msconfig. You won't be eliminating the programs just the automatic
startups.
